Empowering Global Citizenship Through SDG-Based Learning
🌍 Empowering Global Citizenship Through SDG-Based Learning
A Global Schools Advocate’s Initiative from Pakistan

Principal – Central Model School Khanewal, Pakistan 🇵🇰
After completing the Global Schools Advocate Training, I realised that the United Nations Sustainable Deve
lopment Goals (SDGs) should not remain theoretical concepts discussed only in classrooms. Instead, they should become part of students’ real learning experiences and everyday actions.
At Central Model School Khanewal, a school located in a developing area of Pakistan, we decided to integrate SDGs directly into our curriculum so that students could understand global challenges and grow as responsible global citizens from an early age.
Connecting Cultural Learning with Global Goals
During the holy month of Ramadan, our school designed a learning activity where students explored how the values of Ramadan connect with the Sustainable Development Goals.
Students reflected on important themes such as:
Kindness and empathy
Sharing with others
Helping poor and vulnerable people
Peace and harmony
Respect for cultural diversity
Our 9-year-old students expressed their understanding through creative drawings and short written reflections. These activities helped students realise that religious and cultural traditions can also promote universal human values.
Linking Student Learning with the SDGs
Through this activity, students connected their learning with key Sustainable Development Goals:
📘 SDG 4 – Quality Education
🤝 SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities
🕊 SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
🌍 SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
Students learned that festivals such as Ramadan and Eid are not only celebrations but also opportunities to promote compassion, equality, and peaceful communities.
Expanding SDG Learning Through International Collaboration
As a Global Schools Advocate, I believe that promoting SDGs should go beyond a single school or country. Education should build bridges between cultures and encourage students to learn from one another.
Therefore, I shared this SDG-based activity with our international partner schools.
Our partner school EDİRNE MEKTEBİM COLLEGE, Türkiye 🇹🇷 implemented a similar activity with their students after receiving guidance on linking the activity with the Sustainable Development Goals.
It was inspiring to see how students from different countries can learn the same global values while celebrating their own cultures.
Strengthening Global Partnerships
This activity has also been shared with our partner school:
🇬🇧 St. James' C.E. Primary School, United Kingdom
Their students are currently preparing their activity, and once completed, we look forward to sharing their learning with the wider Global Schools community.
These partnerships demonstrate how education can encourage international understanding, respect, and cooperation among young learners.
A Commitment to SDG-Focused Education
After completing the Global Schools training, I made a clear commitment in my school and with our international partners:
We will not organise any educational activity that is not connected with the Sustainable Development Goals.
This commitment ensures that every activity students participate in contributes to building a more sustainable and peaceful world.
Inspiring Educators Worldwide
This initiative from Central Model School Khanewal is a small example of how educators can transform classroom activities into meaningful global learning experiences.
By integrating SDGs into everyday school activities and building international partnerships, we can empower students to become:
Responsible global citizens
Peace builders
Socially responsible leaders
Advocates for sustainable development
